On update was provided on Norfolk’s first ever Food Forest!
Brooke Martin went before Norfolk Council to talk about how the project is going along, and explained exactly what a food forest is, if they haven’t heard of it before.
The project uses perennial plants that are planted once and become established providing food overtime. Over 100 perennials were planted in October of last year at the Waterworks Park location at the corner of Chapel and Nelson. All of the plants were donated by local growers.
Martin says the next step is to add the mulch layer and water tank, which were donated by Norfolk County and should take place in the next week or two. Some of the future plans the forest has are both for educational purposes and social events.
If you’d like to assist, the Norfolk Food Forest is looking for donations and volunteers.
They need volunteer gardeners, but also people to sit on the executive committee. Martin asks anyone interested in helping to reach out through Instagram, Facebook or the following email address norfolkfoodforest@gmail.com.
