Several private marinas in Norfolk County are opening up this morning.
Business Owner Ray Ferris tells us this move to open up, despite provincial mandates telling them they are not allowed, has to do with the interest of fairness.
Ferris inquired about Long Point Provincial Park reopening this Friday after he heard that their boat ramp would be allowed to be open despite a stay-at-home order.
He discovered that this is true, and other provincial parks are allowing this as well.
That was the straw the broke the camel’s back for Ferris and other local business owners who remained closed for weeks despite having strong opposition to the order and the reasoning behind it.
Ferris had previously spoken with us regarding the issue, noting that last year boat launches were run safely and efficiently while other activities remained closed.
He felt should have continued this year as well, and that it was on oversight on the province to force these businesses to close.
Ferris says when they open up this morning, those same safety precautions will be in effect.
Safety is a key word for Ferris, who believes that the current plan – reopening a boat launch only at the Long Point Provincial Park – is a dangerous game to play with COVID-19.
Old Cut Boat Livery, MacDonald Turkey Point Marina, and Sandboy Marina have all publically said they will be opening up this morning.
We have sent an email to Ontario Parks for comment but have not heard back at this time.
