Monday was International Women’s Day, and we are continuing to take this opportunity to check in with some of our Women of Influence.
One thing that is clear is, despite a pandemic and obstacles in their way, these incredible women within our community continue to push forward and better our area.
For Jean Montgomery, this has meant seeing some programs being forced to take a break – like her popular basketball program – while continuing to push ahead with other projects virtually.
She spoke to us about the many projects she has on the go, and how something as hard as a pandemic has also brought to light some amazing qualities in people within Norfolk.
When we last spoke with Heidy Van Dyk-Ellis – she was very busy.
Serving as Director of the Social Services and Housing Department within the county, she was trying to respond to needs within our community through a pandemic.
Now, she sits as Acting GM of Health and Social Services and her focus has broadened but it looking forward to what the future holds.
Pivoting. That is how Carrie Sinkowski has described the past year.
Not slowing down, not taking items off her plate, but actually adding new roles and responsibilities to her agenda.
She says while not being able to physically do things is a challenge, a new virtual world has also opened up doors.
It’s also been an interesting year for Melissa Mummery.
She has been trying to help both buyers and sellers navigate a tricky real estate world during COVID-19 while also serving as Parent Council President for Lakewood Elementary.
Working with families and the school, she’s also had to watch another prolonged virtual learning experience during the last shutdown.
We spoke about how she’s been, her role as Parent Council President, and what 2021 holds.
We will be checking in with other Women of Influence throughout the week.
Until then, you can catch up on the 18 women we’ve highlighted in the community to date here and here.
