It’s the final long weekend of the summer, and the Ontario Provincial Police are reminding drivers to stay focused on the road.
This weekend, the OPP will be focusing on distracted drivers.
Sgt Kerry Schmidt says it remains one of the causes of death on our roads.
The latest stats show that there were more than 5600 crashes this year, as a result of inattentive driving, and 31 people lost their lives, and more than 1000 injured.
Over the past decade, 738 people have died as a result of distracted driving.
Merely holding a cell phone, or other electronic devices while driving is against the law, and starting in January, fines will spike to $1000, three points, and a three-day license suspension.
