The fundraiser began five years ago as a way for the Chary family to honour a loved one, while giving back to a cause close to their hearts.

Since then, it has grown into a community event supported by local businesses, sponsors, volunteers and residents.

Organizers thanked everyone who helped make this year’s fundraiser possible, including businesses that donated raffle prizes, set up booths or contributed to the event.

They also credited the many people who stopped by for sweet corn, bought raffle tickets, donated, volunteered or helped spread the word.

Organizers said Sweet Corn for Cancer has always been about more than the final fundraising total. The event is also a chance to remember loved ones, support people currently fighting cancer and bring the community together.

After five years, organizers said the continued support from both familiar and new faces means a great deal to the family.

The organization is collecting new back-to-school supplies for families involved in its programs and is hoping to have all donations collected by August 18th.

Items being sought include backpacks, lunch bags, pencil cases, water bottles, shoes, clothing and a variety of school supplies. Pencils, pencil crayons, glue, scissors, erasers, sharpeners and rulers are also among the requested items.

The organization says donations should only be dropped off during daylight hours.

Community members interested in helping are encouraged to donate new supplies before the August 18th deadline to help ensure local students have what they need when they head back to school.

County Council passed By-law 2026-76 on July 28th, repealing the previous bylaw and adopting an updated version of the plan along with a new evaluation matrix. The Community Improvement Plan is intended to support the upgrading, rehabilitation, redevelopment and improvement of lands and buildings throughout Norfolk County.

The updated plan includes clarified eligibility criteria for the Brownfield Tax Increment Grant, as well as changes to administrative language intended to reflect current practices. Norfolk County says the existing financial incentives and Community Improvement Project Area remain unchanged.

The County says the public was consulted throughout the process, with comments helping shape updates to administrative processes, incentives and eligibility criteria.

The decision will become final if no appeal is filed, with the deadline to appeal set for 4:30 p.m. on August 27th.

The Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program says six of those deaths occurred in Ontario. Another 12 young people were admitted to intensive care, while 26 spent more than two days in hospital, bringing the total number of severe cases involving prolonged hospital stays, ICU admissions or deaths to 57.

The findings were included in the program’s annual report, which was jointly released by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society. Nearly 80 per cent of reported cases involved children under the age of 16, while almost half involved head injuries.

Doctors say they have seen a dramatic increase in injuries involving e-scooters and similar devices in recent years. At Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, one doctor said e-scooter-related emergency visits climbed from a single patient in 2020 to 107 in 2025.

The report is calling attention to the need for clearer regulations, better enforcement and more public education as the popularity of the devices continues to grow.

The advisory says locally dense fog developed overnight and is expected to persist through Thursday morning.

Environment officials say visibility could be reduced to near zero in some locations, creating potentially dangerous driving conditions.

Motorists are being urged to slow down and allow extra time to reach their destinations.

Drivers should also be prepared for conditions to change quickly, with visibility potentially dropping significantly over short distances.

Randy Laur, President of the Aylmer and East Elgin Agricultural Society, said there is something happening across the fairgrounds for just about everyone.

Food will be a big part of the experience, with about 17 food and drink vendors expected. Laur’s Taffy will also return after the longtime fair favourite came back last year following an extended absence.

New this year are free pony rides and an antique tractor and farm machinery show on Sunday. The fair will also host the Elgin County 4-H Beef Show and the firefighter muster featuring teams from across southwestern Ontario.

Laur credits the fair’s longevity to strong community support.

Agriculture remains at the heart of the event, with home craft competitions, fruits and vegetables, crops and livestock shows. Saturday will include the Elgin County Holstein Show and 4-H Dairy Show.

Saturday night will also bring one of the fair’s biggest attractions — the demolition derby, including the return of a very different kind of derby.

Organizers expect between nine and 12 buses to compete.

Laur said his favourite part of the fair is simply watching the community come together.

After nearly 180 years of history, the Aylmer Fair continues to mix agricultural tradition with entertainment, food and a strong sense of community.

Phillips said Ontario sees more tornadoes than any other province in Canada, making severe summer weather a regular part of life.

He said tornadoes develop when warm, humid and unstable air combines with strong lifting forces, often along a cold front. While they can happen at any time, they are most common between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., when daytime heating is strongest.

Phillips said severe weather usually gives people warning before a tornado forms.

Ontario has already documented several tornadoes so far this year, below the provincial average of about 36 annually.

He encouraged families to stay informed through weather alerts, radio broadcasts and cell phone notifications, and to have a safety plan ready before severe weather strikes.

Norfolk County OPP say the first investigation began Friday when officers responded to a reported assault at an address in the county.

Police determined two people had an interaction on the property during which one allegedly assaulted the other; no physical injuries were reported.

A 67-year-old Haldimand County resident was arrested and charged with spousal assault and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe at a later date.

The second investigation began Saturday following a report of harassment at a separate Norfolk County address.

Police say the victim received unwanted text messages from another person between July 25th and August 8th, despite conditions imposed on that individual.

A 42-year-old Norfolk County resident is facing charges of criminal harassment and failing to comply with an undertaking and is also scheduled to appear in Simcoe court at a later date.

The third investigation was reported Sunday.

Police say the incident stemmed from an interaction inside a vehicle two days earlier at another location in Norfolk County, during which one person allegedly assaulted the other.

No physical injuries were reported, and an 18-year-old Norfolk County resident was arrested and charged with spousal assault.

OPP remind anyone experiencing intimate partner violence that support is available.

The Fair is scheduled to run from October 6th to 12th, and organizers are looking for people interested in working Fair week, taking on seasonal employment or joining the team through a contract position.

Available positions include building supervisors, parking attendants, retail and bar cashiers, facility maintenance and janitorial staff, general labourers, office and administrative support, and event set-up and tear-down crew.

The Agricultural Society is also hiring for part-time contract positions as a Marketing and Social Media Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator.

The Volunteer Coordinator will help with volunteer recruitment, scheduling and engagement leading up to and during the Fair, while the Marketing and Social Media Coordinator will support promotional efforts for the event.

The Fair attracts more than 110,000 visitors each year, and organizers say they’re looking for people who enjoy working with others, take pride in their work and want to be part of a major community event.

The committee will be a joint committee serving Norfolk County, Haldimand County, the County of Brant and the City of Brantford, with members also serving in a similar capacity for the local school boards. The four-year term will begin November 15th, 2026.

The committee provides an independent and impartial process for reviewing concerns about municipal election campaign finances. Eligible voters who believe a candidate or registered third-party advertiser has violated campaign finance rules can apply for a compliance audit, with the committee deciding whether an audit should proceed.

If an audit is approved, the committee is responsible for appointing an independent auditor and reviewing the resulting report. It can also determine whether the findings warrant legal proceedings under the Municipal Elections Act.

Norfolk County says applicants with experience in areas including municipal government, law, accounting, auditing, finance, compliance, governance, investigations or public administration are encouraged to apply.

The committee is required under Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act, with municipalities required to establish it by October 1st of an election year.

Applications are being accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
