A Brant County resident is facing multiple charges following a drug trafficking investigation that originated in Norfolk County.

Members of the Haldimand/Norfolk Ontario Provincial Police Community Street Crime Unit executed search warrants at properties on Harley Road in Brant County during the early morning hours of June 2. The operation was carried out with assistance from the Brant/Oxford OPP Community Street Crime Unit, the West Region OPP Emergency Response Team, and the West Region OPP Tactics and Rescue Unit.

Police say the warrants were part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation. Officers entered a residence at one of the properties and took one individual into custody without incident.

During searches of the properties, investigators seized quantities of suspected cocaine, methamphetamine, Xanax, and oxycodone. Police also recovered drug trafficking paraphernalia, Canadian currency, ammunition, and prohibited weapons.

In addition to the drugs and weapons, officers located four stolen vehicles, including two pickup trucks and two sport utility vehicles.

As a result of the investigation, 38-year-old Michael Vos of Brant County has been charged with several offences, including possession of cocaine and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a Schedule IV substance for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorized possession of a weapon, possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of firearm ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, and possession of property obtained by crime.

The accused remains in custody and was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Simcoe on June 4.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Residents hoping to see the return of a skate park in Simcoe will have to keep waiting, as Norfolk County says there are currently no plans to replace the former facility.

The original Simcoe Skate Park was removed in 2021 with a goal of moving it to a new area.

At the time, Norfolk County was paying approximately $13,000 annually to lease space at the Norfolk County Fairgrounds, where the park had operated for years.

Council directed staff to identify a municipally-owned location for a replacement facility, and the equipment was dismantled and placed into storage while public consultation and site reviews were expected to take place.

Potential locations identified by staff included areas near Simcoe Composite School, Simcoe Lions Park, and Evergreen Heights Park.

In 2024, the issue resurfaced through the Mayor’s Affordability Roundtable.

Members noted the skate park had been a well-used community asset and called for a discussion on the feasibility of bringing a facility back to Simcoe.

However, Norfolk County now says the land previously used for the skate park is no longer available and there are no plans to replace the former facility at this time.

County staff acknowledged that skate parks remain a valued community amenity and said they would support the development of a new facility in Simcoe should a community group decide to champion the project.

Officials pointed to the skate park in Waterford as an example of a successful community-led initiative that was brought forward with the help of local volunteers.

Residents looking for skate park amenities can currently access facilities in Waterford and Port Dover. Community groups interested in pursuing a future Simcoe skate park may be eligible for assistance through Norfolk County’s Community Initiatives Program.

The Norfolk County Agricultural Society is inviting residents to the Norfolk Night Market, returning to the Norfolk County Fairgrounds in Simcoe on today (June 5) and tomorrow (June 6).

Running from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. each day, the event will bring together more than 50 local vendors, artisans, makers, food vendors, community organizations, and local beverage producers for two evenings focused on supporting local businesses and celebrating community connections.

Visitors can browse a wide variety of handmade goods, artisan products, specialty foods, home décor, gifts, and other unique items while enjoying live music and entertainment throughout the event. Food trucks and vendors will also be on-site, along with local beer, wine, and cider producers.

Organizers say the event is designed to be family-friendly, with activities and interactive experiences available for all ages. Children can take part in games and activities while adults can explore shopping opportunities and entertainment throughout the fairgrounds.

New this year are hands-on workshops led by local artists and makers. Participants can register for wood painting and stained glass workshops, offering an opportunity to learn new skills and create a take-home project. Space for the workshops is limited and advance registration is required.

Admission is $5 for adults, while children 12 and under are admitted free. Proceeds from the event will support the Norfolk County Agricultural Society and help fund agricultural education programs, facility improvements, community events, and other initiatives at the fairgrounds.

“The Night Market has become much more than a shopping event,” said Angela Hogeveen, General Manager of the Norfolk County Agricultural Society. “It’s a place where people gather, discover local businesses, enjoy great food and entertainment, and spend quality time together.”

The Norfolk Night Market takes place June 5 and 6 at the Norfolk County Fairgrounds, located at 172 South Drive in Simcoe. Organizers say the event offers something for everyone, whether visitors are looking for unique gifts, local food, live entertainment, creative experiences, or a family outing.

Additional information, workshop registration details, and volunteer opportunities are available through the Norfolk County Agricultural Society.

With warmer weather arriving and motorcycles returning to Ontario roads, a Fanshawe College motorcycle instructor is reminding riders and drivers alike that safety should be a top priority.

Michael Harrison, lead instructor for Fanshawe College’s Motorcycle Training Program, said the start of the riding season presents unique challenges for both motorcyclists and motorists.

After months off the road, riders need time to rebuild their skills and confidence, while drivers often need to readjust to sharing the road with motorcycles again.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/may-29-spring-bikes-01.mp3

Harrison said riders should take time to prepare both themselves and their motorcycles before heading out for the season. That includes checking over the bike, making sure it is mechanically sound, and ensuring they have the proper safety gear.

While helmets are required by law in Ontario, Harrison recommends riders also wear gloves, a sturdy jacket, long pants, boots that extend above the ankle, and reflective gear to help increase visibility.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/may-29-spring-bikes-02.mp3

Spring road conditions can also create hazards for riders. Harrison said loose gravel, leftover road salt, and patches of black ice on colder mornings can make roads especially dangerous early in the season.

For riders looking to sharpen their skills, Fanshawe offers motorcycle skills enhancement courses focused on emergency braking, collision avoidance, lane positioning, blind spots, and building confidence on the road using their own motorcycles.

One of the key habits Harrison teaches is staying proactive and looking well ahead. He encourages riders to follow the “12-second rule,” scanning the road ahead to spot potential hazards and react safely.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/may-29-spring-bikes-03.mp3

In addition to the “12-second-rule” he says riders must also anticipate an immediate path, observing their surroundings at all times.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/may-29-spring-bikes-04.mp3

Harrison also encourages riders to pay attention to their own mindset before heading out. If a rider is distracted, stressed, tired, or simply not feeling focused, he said it may be better to leave the motorcycle parked for the day.

Ultimately, he said safe riding comes down to anticipation, awareness, and practice. By developing strong habits and remaining alert, riders can enjoy the season while reducing their risk on the road.

Students and teachers at Delhi District Secondary School (DDSS) are inviting the community to support arts education through an upcoming fundraiser aimed at keeping creative opportunities available for local youth.

The DDSS Arts Department will host a Coffee House and Art Gala on Tuesday, June 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the school’s Learning Commons. The evening will feature student artwork, live performances by students and community members, and a musical number from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Admission is $5 at the door.

DDSS art teacher and department head Roz Lammens says arts classes give students a safe space to experiment, express themselves, and connect with others, calling the arts a universal language. And judging by the feedback from DDSS students, many would agree.

Music teacher Misty Verbrugge said participation in the arts helps students develop creativity, build confidence, and find a sense of belonging within the school community.

Drama teacher Jenna Thompson echoed that sentiment, saying the arts department has become a second home for many students, providing a space where they can connect with others. After speaking with several students, it is clear many share that feeling.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/ddss-students-friends.mp3

Librarian and music educator Dan Gavin said arts educators often work with limited budgets, but remain committed to creating meaningful opportunities for students. He said, “Our kids deserve to find happiness in their school community by learning about the things they care about.”

The Coffee House and Art Gala is about more than raising money. It’s about supporting programs that help students build confidence, make connections, and find a sense of belonging.

The Norfolk music community is mourning the loss of musician Terry Danko, who has passed away at the age of 76.

Danko’s son, Drew, announced on social media that his father died peacefully in his sleep on May 25 with family by his side. In his message, Drew said his father faced recent challenges with strength and determination and is now “resting with his brothers and friends.”

Born and raised in the Greens Corners area outside Simcoe, Terry came from a deeply musical family. He was the youngest of four brothers, including the late Rick Danko, and music played a central role throughout their lives.

In 2025, Terry and Rick were inducted into the Norfolk Music Hall of Fame in recognition of their contributions to the music industry.

Although often working outside the spotlight, Terry built an impressive career that saw him perform and collaborate with legendary artists including Eric Clapton, Ronnie Hawkins, Stephen Stills, and George Harrison.

Friends, fans, and fellow musicians are remembering Terry Danko as a gifted artist whose contributions to Canadian music will not be forgotten.

The Snowbird Alumni Association is calling on Canadians to write their Members of Parliament about the grounding of the iconic planes at the end of 2026, as the federal government transitions from the CT-114 Tutor to the CT-157 Siskin II.

The Association has launched their campaign, “No-pause, keep the Snowbirds flying.”

The Snowbirds have been flying the Tutor jets since 1971, with the Siskin II expected to become operational in the early 2030s.

They perform shows across North America from May through October, and feature close quarter coordinated stunts, including the iconic nine-abreast formation, and the downward bomb burst.

Lt. Col. Ret’d, Maryse Carmichael was the first female pilot for the Snowbirds and later their first female Commanding Officer, and she wants to see a gradual transition to the new jets, instead of an outright grounding.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/060326-carmichael-02.mp3

Carmichael says Canadians will lose an iconic institution, and an awe-inspiring recruitment tool.

https://media-cdn.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/776/files/2026/06/060326-carmichael-01.mp3

The transition will involve retraining pilots and rebuilding operational expertise, which Carmichael expressed concerns of losing.

Carmichael hopes Canadians rally behind the Snowbirds that have been enjoyed for generations, and write their MPs calling for a reversal of the pause, and instead the implementation of a phased-out transition that keeps the CT-114 Tutor’s in the air for a few more years.

Brantford’s Earl Haig Family Fun Park is officially open for the summer season, welcoming visitors back on weekends throughout June. The City of Brantford says the facility features a lazy river, leisure pool, waterslide, splash pad, mini-putt, and on-site concessions. Officials say staff have been preparing for months to ensure the park is ready for a full season of operations.

Beginning June 5, 2026, the park will operate on weekends before transitioning to daily operations starting June 29 through Labour Day on September 7. Hours will vary across the season, with extended evening access on select days and holiday openings including Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, and Labour Day. Pools open at 11 a.m. daily, while the waterslide opens at noon, with safety requirements including a height minimum and swim test.

Visitors will have access to multiple pass options including daily admission, 10-visit passes, and season passes, along with evening rates.

Turkey Point Provincial Park is among nine Ontario parks benefiting from a large-scale restoration effort led by Forests Canada and Ontario Parks.

The organizations recently completed the planting of 12,000 native trees and shrubs across the province in an effort to restore areas impacted by extreme weather, invasive species, disease, shoreline erosion, and other environmental pressures. This past fall and spring, 4,500 potted trees and shrubs representing 39 native species were planted at parks across Ontario, including Turkey Point Provincial Park.

The restoration work was supported through the Species Conservation Program and is intended to improve biodiversity while helping protect species at risk and their habitats. Forests Canada says the initiative involved partnerships with nurseries, planting crews, and Ontario Parks staff to ensure the long-term success of the projects.

Officials say investments in restoration not only improve the health of provincial parks but also strengthen local ecosystems and communities. The work is part of an ongoing effort to ensure Ontario’s parks remain healthy, resilient, and accessible for future generations.
