Our latest feature for Wholesome Pickin’s Next-Gen Farmer’s Day is Steve Pereira of Pereira Farms.
Like many farmers, Pereira says that farming is in his blood.
Born in Simcoe and raised on his parent’s farm in Windham Centre, Pereira has been around farming since he was just 6-years-old.
Mostly a tobacco farmer, Pereira explains that he began branching out into vegetables over the past few years.
The tobacco industry, he says, has seen a big shift.
Family farms are starting to go away as farms need to increase their volume to remain competitive.
According to Pereira, that’s where technology comes in.
When he began on the farm, he embraced technology, implementing it right away.
The world is changing, he says, and the new machines help make life a little bit easier.
That being said, he emphasizes that being a farmer is still hard work, adding the most important trait of a farmer is dedication.
