Haldimand County has approved their own face-covering by-law.
In a release, the County explains that it aligns with Haldimand-Norfolk Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Shanker Nesathurai’s recommendations and will take effect on August 1st.
The by-law is tailored to the needs of Haldimand County and is meant to give certain businesses the flexibility to develop their own requirements.
Public spaces have been separated into two distinct groups, Category 1 and Category 2, each featuring unique requirements.
Category 1 businesses feature a high volume of foot traffic, including businesses like grocery stores, convenience stores and large retail operations (gross floor area great than 465 square metres).
Individuals won’t be able to enter these spaces without a face covering.
Category 2 businesses include places like office buildings, restaurants, places of worship and smaller retail operations not covered in Category 1.
People won’t be able to enter these Category 2 businesses without a mask unless they can maintain 6 feet of physical distance from other people at all times.
That being said, Category 2 businesses have the right to require individuals to wear a mask regardless of whether social distancing can be maintained.
The by-law says there are people exempt from wearing face coverings including (but not limited to), children under the age of 10 and those with medical conditions and/or disabilities.
However, proof of an exemption is not required.
The by-law will remain in place until November 2nd unless it’s amended or repealed.
