The Provincial Government is asking for help from the Federal Government when it comes to dealing with abandoned gas wells.
Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Toby Barrett recently applauded the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry John Yakabuski on the move.
Yakabuski’s request came after federal funding was announced in Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia, which will see some funds going towards the plugging of the abandoned wells.
Ontario has an estimated 27,000 gas wells, with the majority in southern Ontario.
Barrett says that Haldimand and Norfolk Counties have one of the largest concentrations of gas wells in Southwestern Ontario.
Perhaps one of the most infamous gas wells in the dual counties is located on Forestry Farm road.
The first phase of the County’s remediation plan for the well began in early March after almost a year of planning.
