Dennis Gray has been involved with martial arts since he was a kid.
Itʼs his passion for the art that helps him keep up with some of his young stars, like Mayumi Sripathmarajah (pictured with Gray), who recently won Gold at the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission World Championships.
Gray’s work with his studio, Simcoe Martial Arts, was the reason why heʼs one of 9 coaches who make up todayʼs Hooray for Coaches Day event, presented by White Horse Family Entertainment Centre.
Grayʼs studio teaches a full curriculum of taekwondo, boxing, and kickboxing but Gray says itʼs taekwondo that captured his heart growing up.
His instructor, a three-time world champion, was taught by the right-hand man of General Choi, one of the originators of the style- Gray says he hasnʼt changed a thing.
When it comes to coaching students though, Gray knows he sometimes must change things up.
Being an individual thing, Gray explains that he focuses on the individual students he teaches, working on their weaknesses and building their strengths to help them succeed.
Gray considers his work rewarding and loves seeing his students stick around and grow, not only in martial arts but in life.
One benefit the students offer is an opportunity to learn.
Gray explains that he continues to find himself learning, from students both young and young-at-heart.
