One local resident will be at the Paris Fairgrounds tomorrow for the annual firefighters Association of Ontario meeting.
But it’ll be a slightly different meeting than usual.
Wayne Nie, a longtime volunteer, and resident of Dunnville is being presented with the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal For Volunteers.
The medal, which is part of the Canadian Honours System, celebrates exceptional volunteer achievements in a wide range of fields.
Calling Nie’s scope of volunteering wide might be an understatement.
Nie says that he didn’t even know people had nominated him until he received a call from the Governor General’s office.
Nie and his family are proud of the recognition but he points out that volunteering doesn’t have to be hard, saying that “there’s all kind of organizations that are looking for volunteers, just step up to the plate and volunteer your time.”
