The Pauline Johnson Thunderbirds are still flying high.
The undefeated Thunderbirds improved to 5-0 with a 28-14 win over the Waterford Wolves, but the final score doesn’t tell the whole story.
Waterford, which entered the game 3-1, came out swinging. Tailback Jack Smart found the end zone early to give the Wolves a 7-0 lead, and Waterford held onto that advantage for most of the first half.
Pauline Johnson finally broke through after blocking a punt deep in Waterford territory. Quarterback Anthony Parsons punched it in from one yard out, sending the teams into halftime tied 7-7.
Thunderbirds head coach David Knevel said his team had to clean up some mistakes before taking control.
And in the second half, the Parsons-to-Andre Wright connection took flight.
Parsons found Wright for two touchdown passes in the third quarter as the Thunderbirds jumped ahead 21-7.
But Waterford wasn’t ready to howl its last howl.
Slotback Owen Whitehorn broke loose for a huge 45-yard off-tackle touchdown run, cutting the lead to 21-14 and putting the Wolves right back in the hunt.
Waterford head coach Andrew Miller said his team continues to show it can hang with anyone in the league.
In the fourth quarter, Parsons went back to his favourite target. He connected with Wright for their third touchdown of the half, call it the hat trick, football style, putting the game away 28-14.
Elsewhere, the McKinnon Park Blue Devils stayed undefeated with a 40-13 win over the Delhi Raiders. The Holy Trinity Titans continued their hot streak, edging Cayuga 9-8 for their third straight victory.
The Valley Heights Bears also picked up their first win of the season, beating the Simcoe Composite Sabres 23-17, while the Sabres remain winless.
