New U.S. import bans affecting certain Canadian products are now in effect as the trade dispute between Canada and the United States continues to escalate.
The restrictions took effect at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday and cover a range of Canadian goods, including certain alcoholic beverages, dairy byproducts and motorcycles.
The U.S. government says the measures are a response to what it describes as Canadian retaliation and discrimination against U.S. commerce.
The White House says the new restrictions include certain Canadian dairy and other products that were already subject to 50 per cent tariffs.
Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc’s office says the federal government’s priority remains protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses affected by what it calls unjustified U.S. actions.
The latest U.S. restrictions include alcoholic beverages, some dairy products such as whey, and motorcycles.
The Associated Press reports the banned products represent roughly $967 million in Canadian imports based on 2025 trade figures, with alcoholic beverages making up the majority of that amount.
