A local petition is calling for clearer emergency planning for families living near a large battery energy storage facility outside Hagersville.
The petition focuses on the Hagersville Battery Energy Storage Park, a 300-megawatt facility on Concession 11 Walpole that is now operational.
Organizers say they are concerned about its proximity to Walpole North Elementary School and want residents and parents to know what would happen during an emergency. They are asking for clear evacuation procedures and more information about potential risks.
The petition points to the January 2025 fire at the 300-megawatt Moss Landing battery facility in California. About 1,200 nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says lithium-ion battery fires can produce hydrogen fluoride and other toxic or flammable gases.
Organizers are also raising concerns about road conditions in the area, saying construction traffic has damaged Concession 10 Walpole.
The petition is encouraging nearby residents and school families to support calls for improved communication and emergency preparedness.
