One person is in critical condition following an apartment fire in Delhi.
Norfolk County Fire Department responded to the fire at an apartment building on James Street at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Friday.
About 20 firefighters from Delhi, Courtland and Simcoe stations attended the scene. Firefighters were able to quickly bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to an adjacent apartment.
One occupant was home at the time of the fire and suffered serious injuries.
The individual was transported to hospital and remains in critical condition.
Fire crews also located the resident’s dog deceased inside the apartment.
The Norfolk County Fire Department is recognizing a neighbour and a nearby construction worker who assisted with initial fire suppression efforts using portable fire extinguishers before firefighters arrived.
James Street was temporarily closed while emergency crews responded but has since reopened.
The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will attend to conduct a full investigation.
