With families settling back into their fall routines, another September tradition is returning to Norfolk County.
The 46th annual Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday, September 20 at Simcoe Lions Ball Park on Davis Street East, bringing the community together to raise money for cancer research.
Co-organizers Maddy Thorpe and Mackenzie Thorpe say registration and check-in begin around 10 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10:30 and the run at 11. Maddy told us the event is accessible to everyone.
The morning will also feature a kids’ zone, refreshments, pizza and a visit from Andy the Balloon Guy.
A highlight will be a speech from Terry’s Team member Julie, who will share her experience with cancer.
Organizers say those stories show why the fundraising remains so important. Maddy says the money raised is making a difference, while stressing that it’s important to remember cancer is not just one disease.
Mackenzie explained that Norfolk is coming off its strongest fundraising year yet, which she felt was very encouraging.
Nationally, The Terry Fox Foundation also reached a historic milestone in February, surpassing $1 billion raised for cancer research.
This year’s Norfolk event will feature an Adventure Raffle for Cancer Research, with more than $1,800 in local prizes.
Organizers hope another strong turnout will help keep Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope moving forward.
