Grand Erie Public Health is reminding residents to take a few precautions while enjoying the Labour Day long weekend, which marks the unofficial end of summer.
Whether spending time at the cottage, camping, on the water, travelling or gathering with family and friends, GEPH says planning ahead can help prevent injuries and keep everyone safe.
Residents are encouraged to arrange a designated driver, taxi or rideshare if alcohol or cannabis will be part of their weekend. People are also reminded to know their limits, alternate alcohol with water, eat before and while drinking, and keep an eye on their drinks.
GEPH says people should never drive, boat or operate recreational vehicles while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Anyone taking part in boating or other water activities should wear a properly fitted lifejacket, while children should be closely supervised around water.
Sun safety is also important, particularly during periods of hot weather. Residents are encouraged to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, seek shade and stay hydrated.
For outdoor meals and gatherings, GEPH is reminding residents to wash their hands, prevent cross-contamination and keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.
More information on alcohol, cannabis, injury prevention, food safety and sun safety is available through Grand Erie Public Health.
GEPH offices will be closed Monday, September 7 for Labour Day and will reopen Tuesday during regular business hours. Emergency on-call services will remain available for urgent public health matters at 519-753-4937 in Brantford-Brant or 519-900-9600 in Haldimand-Norfolk.
