The Ontario Provincial Police is reminding everyone to make safety a priority on the roads, trails and waterways this Labour Day long weekend.
According to the OPP, Labour Day weekend has seen more collisions and fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads, trails and waterways than any other long weekend over the past decade.
Since 2015, there have been 69 collisions and 76 fatalities during Labour Day weekends alone.
The OPP says nearly all of the fatalities on roads and trails have involved factors including impaired driving, speeding, inattentiveness, and failing to properly wear a seatbelt or helmet.
On Ontario waterways, nearly all fatalities have been linked to not wearing a lifejacket.
The OPP is urging everyone to slow down, stay alert, drive sober and properly wear a seatbelt, helmet or lifejacket.
Police will be conducting education and enforcement initiatives on roads, trails and waterways across Ontario throughout the long weekend.
Drivers and passengers are also reminded they can report suspected impaired or dangerous drivers to police. If it is safe to do so, call 9-1-1 to report a dangerous driver and help keep everyone on the road, trail and water safe.
