Basketball players looking to get back on the court — whether they have been playing for years or haven’t picked up a basketball since high school — will have opportunities to play in Norfolk County this fall.
The Norfolk Youth Basketball Association is preparing for another season of its adult basketball programs, including a competitive adult team league and a more casual open league for players who want to play without making a weekly commitment.
Doug Montgomery with the NYBA spoke to us about why the youth basketball program branched out to make an adult league.
For players who aren’t able to commit to a full season, the association offers an adult open league.
The open league begins September 21st and runs from 8 to 9:30 p.m.
After the New Year, the open program will also run Thursdays at Waterford District High School from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
Montgomery says the program is generally open to adults 18 and older and is open to men and women.
The open league can also be a way for players to test the waters before deciding whether to join the adult team league.
He says for players who join the league, it provides an opportunity for former high school and college players to return to the sport fully, even if they have been away from the game for years.
The adult team league offers a structured basketball experience, with carded referees, timers and scorers. Games consist of two 18-minute halves.
The adult team league will be played Sunday evenings at Waterford District High School, with games scheduled for 6:15, 7:15 or 8:15 p.m.
The season begins October 25.
The association is currently looking for additional teams.
Montgomery says there are four returning teams committed so far, with the goal of reaching five or six teams for the upcoming season.
Teams generally have about 10 players to help share the cost of entering the league.
Players don’t necessarily need to arrive with a complete team, however.
Montgomery says individual players can be added to existing teams, while enough individual players can also be grouped together to form a new team.
