Packing school lunches can become a daily challenge, but Grand Erie Public Health says involving children in the process can help make healthy eating easier as students return to class.
Public health nurse Emily Smolarz says food plays an important role in helping children get through the school day, starting with breakfast.
When it comes to lunches, parents can give children some control without handing over the entire menu. That could mean offering a choice between two fruits, vegetables or snacks.
Families can also create a list of lunch and snack ideas together, making it easier to plan for the week.
For younger students, Smolarz recommends practicing with lunch containers, lids and packages before school. With limited time to eat at school, being able to open food independently gives children more time to enjoy their lunch.
Hydration is important during the school day, particularly during warm weather.
Keeping food choices practical, involving children and making water available can help families establish a manageable school-year routine.
