A unique space for grief, remembrance and healing is expected to open in Norfolk County later this week, giving residents a place to have the conversations they never had the chance to finish.
A Wind Phone, a telephone installed inside a small booth, is expected to be unveiled in Simcoe following several years of planning between local resident Kathleen Gilchrist and Norfolk County.
For Gilchrist, the project is deeply personal.
She began pursuing the idea after losing her 31-year-old son in 2022, a tragedy that forever changed her life.
The Wind Phone will be located at Colonel Stalker Park in Simcoe, positioned between the park’s two baseball diamonds.
Gilchrist said the location was chosen carefully.
She said learning about Wind Phones inspired her to bring one to Norfolk County, believing it could provide comfort not only to parents who have lost children, but to anyone carrying grief.
Gilchrist emphasizes the Wind Phone is not intended to replace other forms of remembrance.
Some people visit cemeteries.
Others find comfort in church, counselling, journaling or simply talking with family and friends.
She sees the Wind Phone as one more option for those navigating a loss.
At this time, the Wind Phone is scheduled to be unvieled on Friday.
