A well-known piece of Norfolk County history was damaged early this morning after a vehicle crashed into the Dog’s Nest stone monument.
The collision happened shortly after 4:30 a.m., knocking the massive 7.5-ton stone completely off its foundation.
The Dog’s Nest Committee confirmed it is aware of the damage. Committee president David Oliver told Norfolk Today that arrangements are already being made to safely lift the monument back into place.
The Dog’s Nest hamlet was established in 1851, making it older than both Simcoe and nearby Port Dover. It also predates the American Civil War, giving the small community an important place in local history.
While the cause of the collision has not been released, the damage to the landmark has drawn attention from local residents who recognize the monument as a symbol of the historic hamlet.
