Today we are looking at the Boyd family.
The three Boyd children featured in filmmaker Daryl Granger’s local documentary Young Farmer are continuing a family farming tradition that stretches back more than 160 years in Norfolk County.
Connor, Roman and Lauren Boyd recently shared their family’s story with Norfolk Today, explaining that the Boyd family’s roots date back to 1865 when William Boyd immigrated from Ireland and settled in Norfolk County. Today, the seventh generation is helping carry on the operation.
The family now grows corn, soybeans and rye while also raising cattle. Tobacco was once an important crop on the farm before production ended in 2008.
Connor said learning about the family’s history from his grandfather has given him a greater appreciation for the generations that built the farm. Roman enjoys working around tractors and the fields, while Lauren likes learning practical skills, including helping build fences with her family.
Connor already owns nine head of cattle and hopes to one day expand the family operation by adding a dairy barn.
