The deadline is fast approaching for local writers hoping to take part in the 2026 Norfolk Literary Prize.
The Norfolk County Public Library is reminding residents they have until 11:59 p.m. this Friday, July 31, to submit original poetry or short stories for this year’s competition.
Formerly known as Write for Fun, the annual contest celebrates local writers of all ages with categories for children, youth and adults.
Marketing and Communications Coordinator Belinda Smith said the contest welcomes a wide variety of writing styles and subjects.
Writers can submit up to two original entries in both the poetry and short story categories, with stories limited to 3,000 words. All entries are judged anonymously by volunteer judges, and every participant receives written feedback to help improve their craft.
Winning entries are published in a special anthology available through the library, showcasing local literary talent from across Norfolk County, but Smith said the contest is about much more than winning a prize.
To enter, participants must be Norfolk County residents with an active Norfolk County Public Library card. Entrants are also reminded not to include their names on their manuscripts to ensure the blind judging process.
Complete contest rules and online submission details are available on the Norfolk County Public Library website.
