The Grand River Champion of Champions Powwow is returning to Ohsweken from July 24 to 26, bringing together top Indigenous dancers, singers and families from across North America for a weekend of competition, culture and community.
The annual event will once again take place at Ohsweken Speedway, 1987 Chiefswood Road, with organizers introducing a new addition to this year’s schedule.
Organizer Charlene Bomberry said Friday evening will feature free community dances, giving visitors a chance to take part before the competitions begin.
Competitive dancing and singing begin Saturday and continue through Sunday, attracting participants from across Canada and the United States who compete for prize money in a wide variety of age groups and dance styles.
This year’s powwow will include several family-sponsored special dance contests. Bomberry is marking her own milestone of turning 70 earlier this year.
Visitors will also find nearly 100 craft vendors and 35 to 40 food vendors, and plenty of parking.
Bomberry said organizers are doing everything they can to help visitors stay comfortable during what could be another hot weekend.
She adds there will be shaded seating for seniors and people with disabilities.
Saturday’s grand entries are scheduled for noon and 7 p.m., while Sunday’s grand entry begins at noon, with winners expected to be announced around 5 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. each day.
Bomberry said one of the highlights for first-time visitors is seeing the grand entry as dancers fill the arena.
Admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children aged 6 to 12, with children five and under admitted free.
Bomberry said the powwow welcomes everyone, whether they have attended before or are experiencing it for the first time.
