Norfolk OPP is reminding boaters and visitors that safety comes first as thousands of people prepare to head to Lake Erie’s Pottahawk Point for the annual Pottahawk Sunday gathering.
The popular summer event draws boaters from across southwestern Ontario each year. While most people enjoy the day responsibly, Constable Andrew Gamble says officers continue to respond to incidents involving, stranded or missing individuals.
To help prevent emergencies, the OPP is encouraging boaters to plan their trip home before leaving the dock and avoid taking aboard unknown passengers who may not have arranged transportation.
Officers will be stationed at local marinas and patrolling Lake Erie throughout the day. Gamble assures us that vessel inspections will be conducted.
Pottahawk is associated with people having a party on the water, but Gamble wants to remind those bringing the boats out, you have a responsibility.
Emergency access lanes on the water must remain clear so first responders can reach incidents quickly.
Police will also increase patrols on area roads, targeting impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations.
Finally, the OPP remind all boaters to carry their valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card, monitor weather conditions, and choose a sober operator for the return trip.
Anyone who sees a suspected impaired boater or a marine emergency is asked to call 9-1-1 or contact the Canadian Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16.
