New Canada Day traditions are beginning at the Backhouse Historic Site in Port Rowan as families are invited to enjoy a picnic, pioneer games and hands-on activities on July 1.
The Long Point Region Conservation Authority is hosting its first Canada Day celebration at the historic village from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors can enjoy lawn games, crafts, photo opportunities, a pie-eating contest and demonstrations from local artisans.
Curator Chloe Anna said the event is designed to bring the community together in a setting that celebrates local history.
The event will feature pie-eating contests!
Adults will take on real pies instead of whipped cream, while participants in both contests must keep their hands out of the competition.
Families can also try historic games such as croquet, lawn bowling and the 19th-century Game of Graces. Anna explained what the unique 19th-century game is all about.
Visitors will also have the chance to try on pioneer clothing for photos, make souvenir crafts, and meet members of the Norfolk Weavers Guild. Organizers are also hoping to include a live blacksmith demonstration.
Anna said the event is meant to be welcoming for visitors of all ages.
The celebration takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Backhouse Historic Site. Regular park day-use admission applies at $16 per vehicle, making the event an affordable outing for families.
