The OPP in West Region are rolling out a new road safety initiative called “Stop. Look. Live.” aimed at reducing the number of serious and fatal crashes occurring at intersections. Police say intersection collisions remain a significant concern throughout the region.
“Every time a driver approaches a stop sign, they are making a decision that impacts not only their own safety, but the safety of everyone around them. A stop sign means stop – not slow down. A complete stop provides drivers with the time needed to properly assess traffic conditions.” said Staff Sergeant Julie McLeod with West Region OPP Traffic and Marine.
Drivers are urged to take the following steps to protect themselves and others:
- Bring their vehicle to a full and complete stop, allowing time to assess the environment
- Look carefully in all directions, including for smaller or less visible road users
- Pause before proceeding, rather than rushing into the intersection
- Eliminate distractions and remain fully focused on driving
Failure-to-yield and intersection-related crashes claimed 13 lives in both 2024 and 2025. Since May of this year alone, West Region OPP officers have investigated three separate fatal intersection crashes that resulted in a total of five deaths. As part of the campaign, running from June 15 through June 21, officers will increase enforcement efforts and public awareness initiatives. Police will focus on drivers who fail to stop at stop signs, fail to yield when required, or drive while distracted and inattentive.
