Community members opposed to the proposed Minister’s Zoning Order (MZO) for the Nanticoke area were out in Jarvis on Friday, encouraging residents to learn more about the project and share their views before the provincial consultation deadline.
The campaign warns that changing the zoning of lands at the Nanticoke Industrial Park could put existing industrial jobs and future investment at risk while increasing pressure on local infrastructure and public services.
The group argues that roads, schools, healthcare facilities and police services are already under strain and says large-scale residential development could make those challenges even greater. Residents are being encouraged to review the proposal through Ontario’s Environmental Registry and submit comments before July 3.
Haldimand-Norfolk MPP Bobbi Ann Brady is also urging the public to take part in the consultation process. In a public statement, Brady said rapid growth can overwhelm communities if infrastructure does not keep pace, pointing to Fort McMurray’s oil sands expansion as an example.
The proposed Empire Communities project could bring up to 15,000 homes to the Nanticoke area, adding an estimated 37,500 to 45,000 new residents. Brady said public participation is essential to ensure local voices are heard before the province makes a final decision.
