Norfolk County Council has received a proposal to create a Veterans Crosswalk in Simcoe as a permanent tribute to local veterans and active military members.
Stephanie Johnson presented the idea during Tuesday’s Council in Committee meeting, speaking alongside her son Nolan, an active Canadian Armed Forces member who recently returned home after a 13-month deployment that included eight months serving in Latvia.
Johnson said the crosswalk would honour the courage and sacrifice of those who have served Canada while reminding residents of their contributions every day of the year, not just on Remembrance Day. She suggested the crosswalk be installed on Wilson Drive beside the Norfolk War Memorial Carillon Tower.
She told council she has partnered with the Norfolk Community Foundation, which has agreed to accept donations and distribute the funds to Norfolk County once enough money has been raised for the project.
Several councillors discussed the proposed location and community consultation. Councillor Adam Verri noted previous meetings with veterans’ organizations and county staff found support for the location, with most discussions focused on funding and administrative details.
