The Norfolk Harvesters Rugby Club is inviting residents of all ages to give rugby a try as the club continues to grow its programs in Waterford.
Founded in 2002, the club offers rugby opportunities for players starting as young as four years old all the way up to adult men’s and women’s teams. Programs range from flag and touch rugby for younger players to full contact rugby for older age groups.
Club President Greg Wise said the Harvesters focus heavily on creating a welcoming atmosphere for players and families.
Greg adds, “We do a lot together, from training to socials to community events.”
Minis Coordinator Howard Wise said younger age groups are introduced to the sport gradually, playing with flags instead of tackling, helping players learn the basics before any contact is introduced at the U12 level. He acknowledges that rugby looks rough, but no more than other sports.
The club will host a rugby festival at Waterford District High School on June 13 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will feature youth teams from across Ontario, including clubs from Hamilton, Brantford, Niagara, Oakville and Stoney Creek. Senior women’s and men’s games against Sarnia will follow later in the day, with kickoffs scheduled for 12:30 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Harvesters will also host a Family Day celebration on June 20, which Greg recommends for anyone that’s interested in getting involved.
Howard adds, “we do everything together.”
The club continues to accept new players throughout the season. More information can be found through the Norfolk Harvesters Rugby Club Facebook page, Instagram page, or online at NorfolkHarvesters.com.
