Norfolk County is joining communities across Ontario in celebrating Museum Month, a provincewide initiative recognizing the important role museums play in preserving local history and strengthening community connections.
Led by the Ontario Museum Association, the annual program also coincides with International Museum Day on May 18, which highlights the social, cultural, and economic impact museums have within communities around the world.
Throughout the month, museums in Port Dover, Delhi, and Waterford, along with the Norfolk County Archives in Simcoe, are hosting a variety of exhibits, events, and educational programming focused on local history, art, heritage, and sport.
County officials say visitors can expect guest speakers, live music, temporary exhibits from Norfolk County collections, and community-focused programming throughout the month. Organizers say the initiative is designed not only to celebrate the region’s history, but also to encourage residents to engage with museums as active community spaces.
As part of Museum Month, Norfolk County is also promoting its Youth Volunteer and Mentorship Program. The initiative gives young people an opportunity to gain hands-on experience while supporting museum operations and public programming.
County officials say the program helps youth develop practical skills while fostering a stronger connection to local heritage and culture.
Norfolk County museums are open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., while the Norfolk County Archives are open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission to all sites is by donation.
More information about exhibits, programming, and museum locations can be found through Norfolk Heritage & Culture.
