High school students from across the region will get a hands-on look at both the world of motorsports and the skilled trades this Friday as the NHRA Youth Educational Services Day returns to Toronto Motorsports Park.
The event, led by the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) educational program and local partners, will once again combine high-speed racing with career exploration in the trades sector.
That was Jason Hardie, who is involved in the program and works in trades education.
The event also includes guest speakers, post-secondary institutions like Conestoga College, and industry professionals representing dozens of skilled trades.
With demand for trades workers continuing to grow across Ontario, Hardie says the timing is important.
Alongside demonstrations and trade-focused booths, students will also get access to live drag racing, including everything from Top Fuel dragsters to jet-powered cars and classic racing machines.
He says the goal is to give students a day that is both exciting and practical, exposing them to opportunities they may not have otherwise considered.
He notes that the drag racing isn’t just an entertaining event on a day otherwise centred around education.
Hardie says they like to show students first hand how skilled trades, math, and science work hand in hand to make sure vehicles fly down the track.
The event begins with opening ceremonies in the morning, followed by a full day of activities.
Local MPP Bobbi-Ann Brady is also expected to attend.
Students will return to their schools mid-afternoon, with many receiving free passes to return to future racing events at the track.
