Residents across Haldimand-Norfolk are being invited to take part in a meaningful community event that supports those living with dementia and the people who care for them.
The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday, May 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Jarvis Lions Park. Organizers say the event is about more than just walking, it is about honouring loved ones and raising awareness in a community where dementia touches many lives.
More than 770,000 people in Canada are currently living with dementia, and that number is expected to double within the next decade. By 2050, cases could reach more than 1.7 million nationwide. For each person diagnosed, there is often a care partner providing significant weekly support.
The annual Walk is the largest fundraiser in Canada dedicated to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Funds raised locally help provide programs and services such as education, counselling, support groups, and wellness initiatives for individuals and their care partners.
“Every year, we ask participants one simple but powerful question: Who are you walking for?” says Alison MacKenzie, Event Organizer. “The answers remind us why this Walk matters. Dementia can be incredibly isolating — for individuals and for care partners. By walking and fundraising together, we help ensure that people in our community have access to the right support, at the right time, close to home.”
Programs supported by the fundraiser are delivered across the region, including in Hagersville and Simcoe, helping ensure people have access to care and resources close to home.
Community members can call 1-800-565-4614 or visit www.walkforalzheimers.ca to get involved and donate.
