Ontario’s police watchdog has invoked its mandate following a serious collision in Simcoe involving a police cruiser.
The Special Investigations Unit says the incident occurred on April 15 at approximately 1:36 p.m. at the intersection of Norfolk Street North and Riverside Road.
Emergency responders, including the Ontario Provincial Police, Norfolk County Paramedic Services, and the Norfolk County Fire Department, attended the scene.
Authorities say the collision involved a police cruiser and a sport utility vehicle.
The officer driving the cruiser was transported to hospital with minor injuries, while the driver of the SUV sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma centre for treatment.
Under provincial legislation, the SIU is called in to investigate incidents involving police where there has been serious injury, death, or allegations of sexual assault.
As a result of the SIU invoking its mandate, the OPP will not be releasing further details about the incident.
The SIU has taken over the investigation and will determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Officials say updates will be provided as appropriate through the agency.
