Norfolk County council is set to review proposed changes to school zone speed limits aimed at improving road safety around local schools.
A staff report recommends extending reduced 40 km/h zones beyond school property lines at several locations, including schools in Port Dover, Simcoe and Waterford.
The changes are intended to give drivers more distance to slow down before entering high-pedestrian areas where students are present.
Staff say the proposed updates were identified through road safety reviews, service requests, and traffic monitoring programs, and are intended to align local practices with guidance from the Ontario Traffic Manual and provincial standards.
Under the proposed amendments, no new school zones would be created, but existing zones would be adjusted to better reflect recommended distances and improve consistency across the county.
Council is expected to debate the recommendations at today’s meeting, with any approved changes implemented through by-law amendments.
