A long-running program in Haldimand and Norfolk is once again helping young people build confidence, friendships, and life skills as they prepare for high school.
GIRLS Power Camp, run by Haldimand Norfolk Women’s Services, has been part of the community for 27 years. The weekend camp is designed for Grade 8 students and focuses on growth, independence, resilience, leadership, and self-esteem—values that make up the acronym GIRLS. Executive Director Amber Wardell gives us a bit of history.
This year, about 40 campers will attend the program at a new location, Oneida Farms in St. George. The camp includes activities like team-building, self-defense training, and outdoor challenges such as high ropes.
Program Coordinator Michelle Murray, says the experience helps participants step outside their comfort zones.
Wardell added that self-esteem, confidence, and compassion—for both yourself and others—are very important. She said there is also a gendered aspect to these challenges, making strong connections even more important.
She also noted the camp helps youth understand healthy relationships and boundaries.
Murray and Wardell say community support is essential, as GIRLS Power Camp receives no government funding. While the $100 registration fee helps offset costs, it doesn’t cover the full expense. Wardell adds they don’t want the fee to be a barrier for anyone wanting to attend.
The camp runs June 6th to 7th, with registration open until April 15th. Organizers say community donations and sponsorships are key to keeping the program accessible for all participants.
