If you’re looking for a fun, social, and engaging way to spend your Thursday evenings, Board Game Nite at the Simcoe Branch of the Norfolk County Public Library is the place to be.
Every Thursday at 6 p.m., gamers of all ages gather to play, connect, and enjoy a wide variety of board games.
That was Jordan Lahn, one of the organizers of Board Game Nite.
While he wasn’t involved when the event first started in 2013, Lahn has watched it grow and evolve over the years. Membership continues to expand, drawing new participants each week.
Even after taking a temporary dip during the pandemic, when face-to-face interactions were limited, there was a silver lining: many people discovered board games at home as a fun way to pass the time.
Eric Marvin is another key organizer, and he shared his perspective on the evolution of Board Game Nite.
Their goal is simple: anyone and everyone is welcome to come through the door and enjoy a night out, whether you’re a seasoned player or just looking to try something new.
During our interview, we asked Marvin to list some of the games that were played the previous Thursday.
He pulled out a detailed catalog, demonstrating the impressive variety that a typical night offers.
The diversity of games is staggering. Collectively, the group owns nearly 4,000 games.
Lahn told us the wonderful thing about board games is, if you have something you are interested in, they can likely find a game you’d like.
But Board Game Nite isn’t just about the games themselves—it’s also about creativity and social connection. Some participants paint miniatures, 3D print custom game pieces, or craft specialized game inserts, making the hobby uniquely interactive.
Board Game Nite welcomes all ages, though minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Families are encouraged to attend together, and newcomers are always welcome—whether you can make it every week or just drop in occasionally.
The official organizing group, the Norfolk Game Group, works closely with the library to ensure the event is accessible, fun, and inclusive for everyone.
