Norfolk County is providing residents, voters, and prospective candidates with an early look at what to expect for the 2026 Municipal Election.
Key information, important dates, and resources are now available online through the County’s official election website, which will serve as the primary source for updates leading up to voting day.
As part of its outreach efforts, the County is encouraging individuals considering a run for Mayor, Council, or School Board Trustee to attend a Candidate Information Night scheduled for April 9. The session, hosted in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at the County Administration Building in Simcoe.
The information session will provide an overview of the municipal election process, including candidate eligibility, nomination procedures, campaign rules, and key timelines. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask questions directly to election staff. A virtual participation option is available for those unable to attend in person, with advance registration required.
The nomination period for candidates officially opens on May 1, marking the beginning of the formal election process.
One of the most significant changes for 2026 is the introduction of online voting. Norfolk County residents will be able to cast their ballots electronically from October 9 through October 23, allowing voters to participate from anywhere using a computer or mobile device during the advance voting period.
In-person voting will still be available on Election Day, set for October 26, with polling stations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Specific voting locations will be announced closer to the date.
To support voters during the online voting period, the County also plans to establish help centres across the community. These locations will offer assistance with online voting and provide an option for paper ballot voting during the advance period.
Officials are reminding residents to ensure they are on the voters’ list and that their information is up to date. Eligible voters must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, and either a resident, property owner, tenant, or the spouse of an owner or tenant within the municipality.
Norfolk County says the early release of information is intended to give residents ample time to prepare, whether they plan to vote or run for office.
