A new community initiative in Waterford is aiming to recognize and remember local veterans with a series of banners set to be displayed ahead of Remembrance Day.
The Waterford and District Veterans Banner Association is launching the program this year, with plans to install 20 banners in key locations throughout the community starting in September.
Chair Rick Hoffman says the idea was inspired by similar efforts in nearby Port Rowan and South Walsingham.
The program will honour deceased veterans from Waterford and surrounding areas, including smaller communities like Vanessa, Teeterville, and Wyndham Centre.
Each banner will feature a photo and some biographical information, and Hoffman says researchers will also compile full biographies for each veteran.
The archive intends to highlight where the veteran was born, raised, and their life in the community-helping tell the full story of each individual.
Banners will be displayed on poles along Main Street, near the Waterford Bridge, and around the train station area through September, October, and November.
Hoffman says early community response has been strong, with service groups and residents already stepping forward to support the project.
Applications are now open, with a deadline of June 30th. Forms are available at the Waterford post office, the Waterford Heritage Agriculture Museum, and Royal Canadian Legion Branch 123.
