A new affordable housing development is officially underway in Delhi, marking a significant step in efforts to expand housing options across Norfolk County.
Members of Norfolk County Council, staff, and partners gathered to break ground at 686 Gibraltar Street, the future site of a three-storey, 25-unit residential building. The project is being developed in partnership with the Haldimand-Norfolk Housing Corporation and local agencies.
Once complete, the building will include a mix of unit types, with 15 one-bedroom units, eight two-bedroom units, and two accessible three-bedroom units. Those accessible units are being designed in collaboration with the Norfolk Association for Community Living to provide supportive housing for six individuals.
The development will offer a combination of 10 rent-geared-to-income units and 15 affordable units, aimed at helping residents access safe, stable housing in a community facing increasing demand. Officials say the project is part of a broader strategy to address housing instability and reduce homelessness locally.
The Norfolk Association for Community Living will play a key role in supporting residents, providing services that help individuals live safely and independently. The organization has a long-standing presence in the community, offering housing and support programs tailored to a range of needs.
Funding for the project is being shared between the housing corporation and the County, reflecting a collaborative approach to tackling housing challenges. Leaders say partnerships like this are critical as communities across Ontario continue to deal with affordability pressures.
Construction is now underway, with the project expected to be completed by the end of 2027. Once finished, it will add much-needed housing capacity while creating inclusive living spaces designed to meet a variety of needs.
