Premier Doug Ford is calling on the federal government to allow the use of pepper spray for self-defence, saying it could help people feel safer in public spaces.
Speaking at a press conference in Brockville, Ford spoke about how many people in Ontario feel unsafe.
Ford said he sent a letter last week asking for the change, noting that many people are already making the choice to carry pepper spray despite it being illegal.
He went on to say that for him, there is a personal connection for this push.
The issue was one of several justice-related topics raised by Ford, including bail reform and retail theft.
In response, a spokesperson for Sean Fraser said the federal government will continue working with provinces and other partners to improve community safety.
Ford also floated the idea of livestreaming bail hearings, though no details were provided and existing rules allow for publication bans on evidence presented during those proceedings if requested by the accused.
