False emergency calls, commonly referred to as “swatting,” are under investigation in Haldimand County after two incidents prompted large police responses.
The Ontario Provincial Police says officers responded to calls in the Dunnville and Jarvis areas that were designed to create the appearance of urgent and dangerous situations.
Police say the calls were not financially motivated but were instead linked to online peer recognition, with young people being targeted through social media and gaming platforms.
Investigators warn that swatting incidents can escalate quickly and have the potential to cause serious emotional, physical, and psychological harm.
They also divert emergency resources away from real emergencies.
OPP is urging parents and guardians to speak openly with their children about online safety, monitor their digital activity, and watch for warning signs such as secrecy, sudden fear of police involvement, or unexplained stress.
Anyone who feels threatened or pressured online is encouraged to contact police immediately.
