Haldimand–Norfolk MP Dr. Leslyn Lewis used her legislative time to celebrate the life and achievements of Canadian inventor Elijah McCoy in honor of Black History Month.
Born in 1844 in Colchester, Ontario, to parents who had fled slavery in Kentucky, McCoy became a mechanical engineer and inventor whose work revolutionized industrial lubrication systems for locomotives and steam engines.
His innovations were so reliable that the phrase “the real McCoy” is widely believed to be inspired by his work, symbolizing excellence and authenticity.
Lewis highlighted McCoy’s perseverance and ingenuity, noting that despite facing discrimination, he set a standard of excellence that helped shape modern industry.
She emphasized that McCoy’s story is a powerful reminder that perseverance, innovation, and excellence are central to Canada’s shared history, inspiring future generations to pursue ingenuity and achievement.
