A powerful mix of music, politics, and romance is coming to Simcoe this March as Chess the Musical in Concert takes the stage at Simcoe Little Theatre.
The production is directed by Andy Dominick, who also plays Anatoly, one of the show’s lead characters. Dominick says Chess is his favourite musical of all time.
The musical is loosely inspired by the historic 1972 world chess championship between the United States and the Soviet Union, a match that became a symbol of global political tension.
Brittani Hamilton stars as Florence, the show’s female lead. Hamilton is returning to the stage for the first time in 13 years after submitting a last-minute video audition and admits she had not heard of Chess before.
The production is presented as a staged concert, meaning audiences will still see costumes, movement, and set pieces, but with a stronger focus on the music. With just 12 cast members, nearly everyone is on stage for most of the show, creating a full and powerful sound in an intimate setting.
Dominick says Chess appeals to a wide audience, mixing a love story with political intrigue and high-stakes rivalry.
Chess the Musical in Concert runs March 5 to 15 at Simcoe Little Theatre. Evening performances run Thursdays and Fridays at 7:30 p.m., with matinees Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $27.
