The Haldimand detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is investigating an online investment fraud that has left a local resident out more than $45,000.
Police say the victim was convinced to send funds multiple times over a two-month period after connecting with the suspect through a popular social media platform.
Investigators say the scam involved false promises of investment returns, a tactic commonly used in online fraud schemes.
OPP are reminding the public never to share personal or financial information online and to avoid investing money through platforms or individuals they do not personally know.
Residents are also urged not to send money to people they have never met in person.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of fraud is encouraged to report it to police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Police note it is estimated that only five to ten percent of fraud victims report these crimes.
