Strong winds and high waves on Lake Erie
Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Wind Warning for Simcoe, Delhi, and the wider Norfolk County area as strong winds are expected to move through the region today.
The warning, issued early Friday morning, notes that wind conditions could reach an impact level considered moderate, with high forecast confidence.
Gusts are expected to intensify through the day, particularly in areas along the Lake Erie shoreline.
According to Environment Canada, the strongest winds will begin Friday morning and are expected to ease later this afternoon or early this evening.
Wind gusts could reach 90 kilometres per hour, with the potential for gusts exceeding 100 kilometres per hour in shoreline areas.
The weather system moving through the region will begin with showers and a risk of thunderstorms early in the day. These storms may generate wind gusts between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour.
A cold front is then expected to pass through the area this afternoon, bringing another round of stronger winds behind it.
Officials warn that the high winds could lead to localized power outages and minor property damage.
Damage to roofs, fences, tree branches, and temporary or soft structures is possible, and there is an increased risk of injury from flying or falling debris.
Residents are being urged to secure loose outdoor objects, such as garbage bins, patio furniture, and decorations, and to use caution when travelling, especially in high-profile vehicles.
Environment Canada says conditions will gradually improve from west to east as the system moves out of the region later today.
