Crime Stoppers Month officially began in January with a flag-raising ceremony held Tuesday outside the Norfolk County Administration Building in Simcoe, despite steady rainfall.
That was Councillor Kim Huffman, who chairs the Norfolk County Police Service Board and gave opening remarks at the event. Huffman also shared some of the program’s successes in the area, noting how anonymous tips have helped law enforcement solve crimes and prevent future incidents.
Tips submitted to Crime Stoppers are forwarded directly to police, and eligible tips may qualify for cash rewards, all while remaining confidential. This year’s theme is “Safe Streets, Strong Communities… Together We Can Stop Crime.”
Lillian Wilson, secretary with Haldimand & Norfolk Crime Stoppers, said the January campaign is about awareness and reminding residents that Crime Stoppers is a trusted option for sharing information. She explained that anonymity is one of the program’s greatest strengths
She added this is especially true when tips involve neighbours or sensitive situations. Wilson encouraged the community to get involved as Crime Stoppers is always seeking volunteers.
The next Crime Stoppers fundraiser is a buffet dinner at Boston Pizza in Simcoe on the night of January 20, with proceeds supporting local Crime Stoppers programs and outreach.
