Girls’ hockey continues to grow in Norfolk County, and the Norfolk HERicanes U18 House League team is showing just how strong that momentum has become—both on and off the ice. Along with rising interest, the team is also celebrating a major victory: Sophie Jefferson and her teammates won the House League tournament in Woodstock this past weekend, defeating the Upper Maitland Mustangs 1–0 in a thrilling final. The win was especially sweet after losing to the same team 0–2 the night before. Coaches and players were thrilled with the turnaround.
Sophie, now in her second year of U18, says playing in a dedicated girls’ league helped her build confidence and friendships.
She encourages younger girls to try the sport, reminding them that mistakes happen and hockey is “a forgiving game.”
Her father and coach, Martin Jefferson, says the growth of girls’ hockey is unmistakable.
The team will carry their winning attitude into their Teddy Bear Toss game on December 14 at Talbot Gardens, where admission is free. Sophie gives us the details.
Donations will support Norfolk General Hospital and Haldimand-Norfolk Women’s Services, spreading holiday cheer to local children.
Let’s Go HERicanes!
