With the holiday season in full swing, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) is once again reminding parents and caregivers that lottery tickets should never be given to children.
Although they may seem like simple stocking stuffers, lottery products are a form of gambling intended strictly for adults 18 and older.
OLG says early exposure to gambling can increase the risk of addiction later in life, making it important for families to avoid sending the wrong message through holiday gifts.
The organization is encouraging parents to focus on meaningful experiences—much like the lesson learned by the Grinch—rather than risky or age-inappropriate items.
To support families in making informed decisions, OLG promotes a number of free educational resources:
• YMCA Youth Gambling Awareness Program — helps young people understand gambling risks and build healthy decision-making skills
• CAMH Gambling, Gaming and Technology Use Program — provides tools for service providers and families dealing with gambling-related harm
• Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) — offers information on prevention and early warning signs for teens and young adults
