Fanshawe College’s Simcoe/Norfolk Regional Campus is gearing up to welcome future students, families and community members to its Fall Open House.
The event, taking place this Saturday, is designed to showcase programs, staff expertise and the unique advantages of studying close to home.
Associate Dean Krista Zilkey says the open house runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to anyone interested in learning more about local programs, whether they’re still exploring options, have already applied, or have confirmed an offer and want to meet faculty before classes begin.
Zilkey said the campus is not as large as you may see in a bigger city, but that isn’t a bad thing.
Visitors on Saturday can tour classrooms and labs, ask program-specific questions, and learn about the many supports available to students.
Zilkey notes that interest often shifts year-to-year depending on industry needs, but two programs consistently draw attention: Practical Nursing and Adventure Expeditions and Interpretive Leadership.
The Practical Nursing program launched at the Simcoe campus last fall, marking a major addition to the healthcare training available locally.
Meanwhile, the Adventure Expeditions program shines at open houses with its unique displays.
Beyond programs, Zilkey says many students appreciate the ability to study locally without the financial strain of relocating to bigger cities like London.
Fanshawe’s Simcoe campus offers the same support systems as the main campus — including counseling, student services, and a student union — but close to home.
She adds that the open house is for everyone as they do offer a wide variety of programs.
The campus also features state-of-the-art facilities, such as a recently upgraded health lab complete with advanced mannequins, hospital beds, and clinical equipment used in both the Practical Nursing and PSW programs.
Trades students benefit from a fully equipped welding shop, and agribusiness learners study alongside instructors with real-world industry backgrounds.
Zilkey says Fanshawe’s connection to Norfolk County is one of its biggest strengths. Employers sit on program advisory committees, help shape curriculum, and regularly accept students for field placements – ensuring graduates enter the workforce with relevant, practical experience.
Likewise, many instructors are active professionals in their fields, bringing firsthand knowledge to the classroom.
